A 54-year-old woman born in Suriname, who has been living in the Netherlands for the past 37 years, with an unremarkable medical history, presented to our clinic at the Center of Tropical Medicine and Travel Medicine, Academic Medical Center (AMC), Amsterdam, Netherlands. She had visited family in Paramaribo, Suriname, in January, 2016, and was extensively exposed to mosquitoes. Her complaints started 11 days after arrival in Suriname (day 0; 2 weeks before presentation at our clinic), with fever (39·3°C), fatigue, loss of appetite, generalised weakness, and swollen and painful wrists, hands, and ankles (figure).
