What is this? The symptoms of COVID-19 range from those that might not be noticeable to severe life-threatening illness. The presence of certain comorbidities may represent potential risk factors for poorer outcomes. In this rapid review, the authors searched for studies which described the epidemiological, clinical features of COVID-19, and the prevalence of chronic diseases in infected patients. They restricted their search to articles published from January 2019 to February 2020, and did the search on 25 February 2020. They included 7 studies, including 1576 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 from hospitals in China in their meta-analysis. What was found: At the time of this review, available research showed that the most prevalent clinical symptom was fever, followed by cough, fatigue and dyspnea. At the time of this review, available research showed that the most common comorbidities were hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease. At the time of this review, available research showed that patients with severe COVID-19 illness were more than three times as likely to have cardiovascular disease, more than twice as likely to have hypertension and more than twice as likely to have respiratory disease, than patients with non-severe illness. At the time of this review, the prevalence rates of these comorbidities in COVID-19 cases in other parts of the world was uncertain. | en_US |
